Dollard’s history

Dollard sits on the historic Red Coat Trail in the southwest corner of the province, 13 km west of Shaunavon and 21 km east of Eastend, in the Rural Municipality of Arlington No. 79.

By 1908 enough French-speaking settlers had arrived in the region to form a community, which they called Valroy (Val Roy). The name was later changed to Dollard. Father Louis-Pierre Gravel, the founder of Gravelbourg, chose it to honour Adam Dollard, Sieur des Ormeaux, a hero of New France.

The community took shape quickly. A post office opened in 1909, and in 1911 the church of Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) was built. A store soon followed, and a school opened in 1912. Father Onésime J. Rioux served as the parish's Catholic priest from December 1918 until November 1940. The post office closed in 1988.
